Children's Garden Educational Horticulturist

TITLE: Children’s Garden Educational Horticulturist
REPORTS TO: Manager of Display Gardens and Manager of Youth Programs

SUMMARY
This position coordinates the development and maintenance of display gardens in the Children’s Garden to ensure the highest standard and quality for the education and enjoyment of the visitors. Also maintains the parts and pieces of the interactive components of the Garden, interacts with families and children, and collaborates with the Education Department on certain programs and components.

Essential functions of job and percentage of time spent on each:

  1. Coordinate, implement, monitor and participate in horticultural practices necessary to maintain the highest standards for the Garden. Supervise assistant horticulturist 50%

  2. Foster an appreciation of nature by creating informal play and interactive experiences in the Children’s Garden. Examples include: placing out watering cans for use by children, setting aside temporary empty beds with shovels for digging, creating leaf piles in the fall. 15%

  3. Interact with families and children while gardening in the Children’s Garden, in consult with horticulture and education create interactive plant displays, and foster interpretation and participation opportunities. 15%

  4. Maintain components of and monitor usage of interactive pieces within the Children’s Garden. Examples include: collecting balsa building station wood and dismantling dangerous buildings, collecting water wall paint brushes, monitoring beehive, inspecting and repositioning musical instruments. 10%

  5. Be available for participation in formal youth programs. Examples include: summer camp, after school programs, classes, nature play and others. 10%

Minimum skills required to perform job:
Must be able to sustain moderate physical exertion fairly consistently with full range of body motion for lifting up to 50 pounds;
must be able to operate hand and power garden equipment;
must know and use safety procedures.

Minimum level of education: Bachelor’s degree in horticulture, botany or related field

Experience: Four to Five years professional gardening experience, including at least one year working with children in a garden setting.

Specific skills:
Required to work in all weather conditions, supervise others, effectively and enthusiastically communicate with the public and children, supervise others, and possess basic computer skills

Language, license, certification:
Valid driver’s license,
GA Pesticide Applicator’s License

Additional skills, training or experience that would be helpful in performing the job: Teaching, public speaking and writing skills are a plus
