Calhoun Lecture

Every other year, the Garden offers a special opportunity for teachers to supplement their life science curriculum with presentations by leading horticulturists, explorers and researchers. The lectures are free and open to students in grades 6 - 12. After the lecture, participating classes are invited to take a self-guided tour of the Garden. The next Calhoun Lecture will be in 2021. 2019 Program: Frogs Fly Home - A Conservation Success Story

Fourteen years ago a group of scientist raced to evacuate frogs from the wilds of Panama before they could become infected with a deadly chytrid fungus that was sweeping the region. Earlier this year, partner organizations collaborated to unite the remaining populations of those two Panamanian species after over a decade of quarantine. Now researchers will continue to work with these species both in Panama and at the Atlanta Botanical Garden to prepare for reintroduction trials in the near future. Chelsea Thomas, Amphibian Conservation Coordinator, will discuss recent research on chytrid fungus, her experiences traveling with the frogs, and small steps we can all take to help amphibians both here and abroad.
