SUMMARY:Niki in the Garden
DESCRIPTION:In a year of anniversaries\, what better way to celebrate the Garden’s 50th than an encore exhibition of artist Niki de Saint Phalle’s monumental sculptures that debuted at the Garden 20 years ago this spring. \nThe French sculptor\, who died in 2002\, was known as one of the first female sculptors of massive works\, particularly her “Nanas” – light-hearted\, whimsical and colorful large-scale sculptures of females\, animals and monsters. \nThis year’s exhibition\, presented May 9 – September 6\, will feature 41 works in what’s believed to be the largest showing of the artist’s art ever presented in North America. Most will be on loan from the Niki Charitable Art Foundation and others from private collections. \n“Those who saw the 2006 exhibit are going to relish experiencing these fun\, joyful sculptures again\, and those who didn’t are in for a major treat!” said Garden President & CEO Mary Pat Matheson. \nThe often-playful\, extremely colorful sculptures range from Grand Step Totem\, weighing in at 2\,000 pounds\, and the Large Yelling Man\, towering as 16.5 feet\, to small wall hangings of reliefs measuring 2 feet square. \nThe most iconic of the pieces – all displayed throughout the Garden as well as Conservatory\, Orchid Center and Gardenhouse Gallery – will be The Three Graces frolicking in the Skyline Garden pond. \nIn addition\, an interpretive exhibit on the artist and her work will be on display near the entrance to the Orchid Display House. \nLearn more

SUMMARY:Frog Feeding
DESCRIPTION:Saturdays at 10 a.m.: Drop by the Fuqua Conservatory lobby to watch the frogs jump into action when presented with their meals. An amphibian specialist will share fun facts and answer questions about these captivating creatures. \nPublic frog feedings allow visitors to observe one of the most interesting aspects of these amphibians – their feeding behaviors. Most frogs have long sticky tongues that shoot out at prey. Some\, like Poison frogs\, are able to do this with such incredible speed and accuracy that all visitors notice are flies disappearing. Others\, like the fringed leaf frog\, are dramatic feeders that stuff the crickets into their mouths with their hands.

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT: Fresh Plates Dinner: Robert Owens
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a fun evening dining\, sipping and learning as Chef Robert Owens\, Owens & Hull BBQ prepares a four-part small plate menu. Learn new recipes and taste freshly prepared courses and wine.  \nSchedule: Wednesday\, June 10\, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.\nFee: $100 (Members $95)\nDeadline: One week before session  \nJOIN THE WAITLIST \n\n \nAbout Chef Robert Owens \nRobert Owens is a Georgia native\, Southern through and through. Spending summers growing up in South Carolina with his grandmother Harriet\, he attributes his love for fresh vegetables & thoughtful care for his cuisine to her and his memories of picking vegetables from her garden\, bringing them straight to the kitchen to make meals alongside her.  \nWhen his family moved to the Roswell area\, Robert started his professional career working in local restaurants. He spent time with excellent company and learning from staple names in the Atlanta restaurant scene\, like Araxi & Todd Annis\, Deux Plex & Hector Santiago\, plus a number of Concentrics Hospitality Restaurants with Bob Amick & Todd Rushing. In the early 2000s\, he started looking for something a bit different and that he could spend the rest of his time learning\, honing the quality & making his own – ultimately finding himself immersed in all things barbecue\, thanks to a reconnection with the beloved (and dearly missed) Dave Roberts of Sam’s BBQ-1.  \nIn 2011\, he opened Grand Champion BBQ and grew to 5 stores by 2015. Earning accolades for its mac and cheese + brisket and ribs from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and named “Best Runner-Up BBQ” by Atlanta magazine\, Robert eventually wanted to redirect his focus to the highest quality meats\, woods\, smokers and fresh sides – paring down the Grand Champion menu to perfect the best of the basics.  \nHe now operates Owens & Hull out of Grand Champion’s location in Smyrna\, where he blends Texas & Carolina styles of BBQ to create his own Georgia brand – focusing on curating the highest quality ingredients to smoke and serve\, with a rotating menu of fresh & creative sides.  \nSince opening\, Owens & Hull landed on Eater Atlanta’s “Hottest New Restaurants” list for several months in a row\, and was named to Southern Living’s “Top 20 Hottest BBQ Restaurants in the South\,” alongside features in Texas Monthly and earning writer Daniel Vaughn’s third spot in his list of BBQ destinations around the U.S. in 2024.  \nRobert has over 25 years of experience in the hospitality industry\, with 15 of them specific to BBQ. He resides in the Atlanta area and enjoys F1 racing in the time he’s not tending to the smoker.

He worked on recipes some good and some bad. At nine he made a dish for Thanksgiving that caused the family to doubt his cooking abilities. That still did not stop his passion to pursue a culinary career. \nChef Butts graduated from Johnson C. Smith University with a degree in Mass Communications\, Public and International Relations with a minor in broad casting. He became a rising star at the university which included receiving the first-time title for the university\, “Mr. Johnson C. Smith.”  His communication skills were put into action at a local news station. Chef Butts’ professional ambitions still dreamed of fulfilling his passion for the culinary craft. He then graduated from the Art Institute of Charlotte with high honors.  The hunger to broaden his knowledge\, shifted his studies abroad. moving and living in the South of France where he picked up a job at Hotel La Source. He also spent time in Italy and Holland.  At this time Chef Butts learned the simplistic and beauty of how food should be experienced. One of his mentors Chef Morgan took him out to the garden every morning to challenge him with bringing the garden to the table.  Chef Butts became a household name in a small French town. \nSince returning to his home in Atlanta\, Chef Butts has had the opportunity to share his culinary \ntalents with many top named and respected Chefs and restaurants.  He has grown from a prep cook to an Executive Chef.  Winning many awards including two-time winner of Taste of Atlanta\, Heritage fire Atlanta Champion\, winner of Southwest Brunch Fest\, best dish twice Culinary Fight Club Champion\, King of the Kitchen Winner of Atlanta\, one of the Top 10 Up and coming chefs from Nola Farm to table\, Atlanta Brunch Fest winner\, Fish House Live Winner\, James Beard Burger Battle Champion.  Articles that named Chef Butts a Rising star of Georgia by Restaurant Informer.  Additional articles from James Beard\, Food and Wine\, Eater Magazine\, Eater Atlanta\, Bon App\, and Dlish British Magazine. His path then led him to Las Vegas\, where he spent 15 years – some of which was spent on the opening team for the Wynn Las Vegas – before moving to Atlantic City and joining the team at Borgata Hotel.  Ultimately\, he made his way back down South\, working as executive chef at Ludacris’ Chicken and Beer in Atlanta and Covington’s City Pharmacy before joining the Marcus Bar & Grille team in 2024. \nKnown for his “modern Bayou” cooking style and crowned a winner on Food Network’s Chopped in 2024\, outside of the kitchen\, Caldwell finds joy in family time\, fishing trips\, gardening\, and exploring small towns to support local businesses. \nAbout Chef Max Hines \n \nExecutive Chef of Eater’s 38 Essential Atlanta Restaurants Breaker Breaker\, Maximilian Hines was a Rising Star Chef 2022\, and won Atlanta magazines best pop up 2023 with his pop up Stolen Goods. Hines’s personal project\, Stolen Goods\, hosts pop-up events which feature ‘irreverent’ interpretations of well-known dishes. The project focuses on intersections of world cuisines\, with particular attention paid to the impact of the African Diaspora on food cultures. Stolen Goods works to shed light on the stories of Black cooks—past and present—and to create opportunities for Black industry professionals.  \nAbout Chef Demetrius Brown \n \nDemetrius Brown discovered his love for food at an early age\, inspired by his late great-grandmother’s cooking. Born into a Trinidadian and Jamaican family and raised in Providence\, Rhode Island and Atlanta\, Georgia\, Demetrius started cooking for his family at the age of five. He grew up surrounded by diverse cultures and found that the restaurant landscape he encountered was disconnected from the cuisine and dishes he wanted to create – a frustration that ultimately led him down a path to explore his heritage. \nBrown’s gastronomic passion was kindled during his teenage years when his grandfather introduced him to one of the premier culinary schools in the U.S.\, Johnson & Wales University\, during a trip to Providence. Despite initial expectations to follow in his family’s footsteps in the automotive industry\, Brown decided to pursue his passion for cooking\, enrolling at Johnson & Wales. After graduation\, he returned to Atlanta\, carrying with him a burgeoning desire to delve into the exploration of Caribbean and Afro-American cuisine. \nFollowing time working at some of the finest restaurants in Atlanta and The Hill at Serenbe in Chattahoochee Hills\, Brown’s professional career continued to blossom as he took on the role of executive chef at The Pinewood in Decatur\, Georgia\, where his innovative approach earned him an Eater “Young Guns” nomination in 2020. The next year\, in the midst of the pandemic\, Brown launched Heritage Supper Club. Through the project\, Brown shared the rich traditions of Caribbean and Afro-American cuisines\, and earned the title of “Best Food Pop-Up” from Atlanta Magazine in 2021. \nHis quest to celebrate the cuisine of the African diaspora advanced with his acquisition of Bread & Butterfly – Atlanta’s Parisian daytime café in Inman Park – in August 2023\, following a successful Heritage Supper Club pop-up event at the restaurant under its former owner and chef Billy Allin. Paying homage to Bread & Butterfly’s roots\, Demetrius has evolved many beloved breakfast and lunch dishes on the menu while thoughtfully weaving in his signature culinary style and building upon his strong relationships with small\, local farms. As part of the restaurant’s next chapter\, Brown opened the restaurant for dinner\, featuring a new menu serving French cuisine as seen through the lens of the African diaspora\, particularly Caribbean cuisine. Brown aims to educate patrons about the origin and evolution of these dishes while making them approachable to a broad audience. Since its debut\, Bread & Butterfly has been named to The New York Times’ America’s Best Restaurants in 2024 and The 25 Best Restaurants in Atlanta list in 2024 and 2025. The concept was also nominated for the Georgia Business Journal’s Best Specialty Restaurant category in 2025. In addition to his efforts in the kitchen\, Demetrius is a Food Network Chopped Next Gen finalist and winner of Food Network’s Beat Bobby Flay. \nThrough his culinary ventures\, Brown seeks not only to bring beautiful flavors to the table\, but also aims to inspire the next generation of chefs and contemporaries to push the boundaries of the food industry. His journey from a young boy cooking for his family to a celebrated chef reshaping the culinary landscape in Atlanta and beyond exemplifies his dedication to discovering and sharing his heritage through food. \nAbout Chef Justin Dixon \n \nChef Justin Dixon is an Atlanta native and the founder of Humble Mumble\, a concept that helped redefine the city’s sandwich scene through bold\, flavor-driven cooking. His work is rooted in Southern tradition with global influence\, focused on balance\, depth\, and dishes that feel both familiar and unexpected. \nJustin’s approach to cooking is thoughtful and intuitive\, with an emphasis on layering flavor\, honoring ingredients\, and creating food that connects. Whether in a casual setting or a collaborative dinner\, his goal is always the same: to make food that resonates and leaves a lasting impression. \nOutside of the kitchen\, Justin is a plant lover\, vinyl enthusiast\, and someone who puts family at the center of everything he does\, all grounded in a deep love for his city.

When she was six\, her family immigrated to the United States. The new country felt unfamiliar at first but she slowly adjusted into the diverse community over time. Her parents would garden growing up and provide fresh food for the family. As she grew older\, she joined Jolly Avenue Garden\, a community space where people from many backgrounds grew their own food and shared their stories. She loved learning from other gardeners and seeing how gardening could bring people together. Inspired by her family and her time in the garden\, Sela decided to study horticulture and is now starting her own garden at home.  \n\nJa Jyu Lon Ko \n \nTwo Fish Myanmar serves authentic Burmese dishes. The menu attracts customers seeking traditional comfort food from Myanmar\, as well as new customers experiencing the cuisine for the first time.   \nOwners Yapar and Ja Jyu Lon Ko\, resettled in the United States in 2015. After years of running the business part-time from their home\, the family decided to launch their homestyle cooking into a full time business in spring of 2024. \nThe name of the business comes from the story of Jesus taking five loaves and two fish\, multiplying them to feed a crowd. \n\nKarim + Miriam Alrubaii \n\n \nAl Chef is a family-owned Mediterranean restaurant located in the Clarkston Market in Clarkston\, Georgia\, serving the diverse communities of the greater Atlanta area. The business is rooted in the story of husband and wife Karim and Siham. The head chef\, Karim Alrubaii\, was born in Basra\, Iraq\, and the owner/sous-chef\, Siham Suleiman\, was born in Ayn Al-Shams\, Syria. Both fled to Lebanon before eventually immigrating to the U.S. Like many immigrants\, food became their bridge to culture and home. Karim spent over 30 years in kitchens; before coming to the U.S.\, he built a restaurant on a ship that used to import supplies to Iraq.  \nAfter immigrating\, Karim cooked at the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta for 14 years until their daughter\, Miriam Alrubaii\, made his dream come true. While earning her degree in Human Resource Management\, Miriam founded the business\, Al Chef\, as an LLC with her mom\, Siham. After graduating from Oglethorpe University in May 2025\, Miriam took over daily operations while Siham\, half-owner and cook\, worked alongside Karim. Now\, Miriam has handed the daily operations to her brothers\, Sharball and Yousif Alrubaii. Since opening in March 2024\, Al Chef’s mission is to serve authentic Mediterranean food that reminds refugees and immigrants of home while welcoming all cultures to enjoy traditional Middle Eastern cuisine. \n\nRitha Mwida \n \nRitha Mutombo Mwidya is a Congolese cook\, theology student\, and community advocate living in Atlanta\, Georgia. Born and raised in the Democratic Republic of Congo\, Ritha carries the rich culinary traditions of Central Africa in her hands and heart. For her\, cooking is more than preparing food; it is storytelling\, hospitality\, and cultural preservation. \nRitha is married and a proud mother of two. As a wife\, mom\, and Master of Divinity student at Columbia Theological Seminary\, she balances family life\, school\, and community with deep faith and determination. She cares deeply about immigrant and refugee communities\, especially women who may doubt their voice or calling. Ritha believes God gives each person gifts\, and she hopes to encourage women\, especially Congolese women\, to believe in themselves and in the purpose God has placed in them. \nFor Ritha\, food is personal. When she prepares samoussas\, beignets\, or Pondu (yuca leaves)\, Ritha will be cooking the meals she grew up eating\, meals that remind her of home\, family gatherings\, laughter\, and strength. Sharing Congolese food is her way of sharing where she comes from and inviting others to feel welcome at the table. \nThrough events like the Refugee Recipe Celebration\, Ritha hopes not only to nourish people’s bodies but also to foster understanding\, connection\, and community around the table. \n\nLive Music and Dance Performances \n\n \nWatch West African dance\, drum and sekere performances by Egun Omode\, listen to music by the Clarkston Strings High School Small Group Orchestra\, and watch Burmese dance performances. \n\nDiscovery Stations\nStroll the Garden and visit discovery stations from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Talk with Friends of Refugees staff and the International Rescue Committee Youth Food Justice Interns to learn about the interesting work they do. SUMMARY:Refugee Recipe Celebration Chef Demos
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the strong connections among plants\, food and culture in honor of World Refugee Day! Chefs from Friends of Refugees mix up our weekend cooking demonstrations with international recipes alongside other activities that highlight Atlanta’s diverse refugee communities and foodways. \n\nWatch and learn as chefs from the Friends of Refugees prepare international recipes in the Outdoor Kitchen\, then try a small sample.* \n*while supplies last \n10:30 a.m.  Sela Paw with LorAe Htoo and Aewa Shee – Karen Cuisine (Burma) \n11:30 a.m. Ja Jyu Lon Ko\, Two Fish – Burmese Cuisine \n12:30 p.m.  Karim + Miriam Alrubaii\, Al Chef – Iraqi/Middle Eastern Cuisine \n1:30 p.m.  Ritha Mwida – Congolese Cuisine \nLearn more about chefs below: \nSela Paw \n \nSela Paw was born in Burma and moved to a Thailand refugee camp with her family when she was an infant.
