PRINCIPAL FUNCTION:

The Atlanta Botanical Garden is accepting applications for a Conservation Coordinator for the Southeastern Center for Conservation within the Department of Conservation & Research. The successful candidates’ primary role will be to serve as the coordinator for key conservation projects, reporting to the Conservation & Research Manager.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinate and assist in fieldwork related to conservation projects, including working with various individuals, organizations, and agencies.
  • Assist in the design and implementation of research projects concerning the biology and management of rare plants and rare plant communities, communicating results through publications and presentations.
  • Establish and maintain regular communication with private, state, national, and international conservation organizations.
  • Collaborate with internal and external colleagues to identify, prioritize, and develop new project funding opportunities, as well as ensure current project deliverables are met.
  • Manage, collect, assemble, and analyze various types of conservation data as well as produce maps using GIS software.
  • Participate in conservation strategic planning.
  • Assist with identifying, procuring, and maintaining seeds of rare and endangered plant species for conservation and research pertaining to the new seed banking initiatives at ABG.
  • Assist in the development of grant proposals and assist in other fund-raising efforts.
  • Publicize the program through presentations, blog and social media posts, articles in popular and professional publications, and brochures.
  • Organize and train volunteers and student research assistants, as assigned
  • Develop educational programming and curricula related to botanical conservation for interns and undergraduate & graduate student outreach
  • Supervise conservation-focused projects of undergraduate researchers/interns
  • Coordinate meetings of the Southeastern Center for Conservation. Organize field trips, set deadlines for research results and reports, and gather permits and background literature as needed.
  • Facilitate meetings, negotiate project details with colleagues from multiple institutions, develop projects into programs, motivate students and volunteers, and empower others to dedicate themselves to plant conservation.
  • Coordinate projects with diverse individuals and groups, including the general public, private landowners, gardeners, agency personnel, volunteers, non-profit staff, undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, staff, and high school-aged children.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • M.S. in Ecology, Botany, Plant Biology, Conservation Biology, Restoration Ecology or related field with 3 years of work experience. OR Ph.D. degree with a minimum of 1.5 years of work experience in coordination of conservation programs or projects.
  • A self-directed team player who works well independently.
  • Must have good skills with plant identification at the species, genus, and family levels, preferably of southeastern North America.
  • Must be proficient in English.
  • Must be able to drive a wide variety of vehicles, including 4WD.
  • Evidence of good character, mature attitude, and professional integrity.
  • Must have very good interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with a wide variety of audiences.
  • Experience or willingness to learn best practices in procuring seed and/or living plants, basic horticultural techniques, and growing and managing living plants and/or seed collections in greenhouse setting, seedbank facility, and/or botanical garden.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Seasonally frequent travel to Gainesville, Georgia, and field sites throughout the southeastern US and international field sites will be required for this position.
  • Position involves strenuous fieldwork in extreme weather conditions; the ability to lift 50 lbs. is required.

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to effectively respond to multiple, changing and often conflicting priorities is essential.
  • Must be able to effectively interact with the general public and co-workers and peer professionals.
