PRINCIPAL FUNCTION:

The Atlanta Botanical Garden is seeking a highly motivated and results oriented horticulturist to join our Conservation and Research team focusing on collections, safeguarding, and propagation of rare and endangered species of the southeastern United States.  The successful candidate will work in a team-oriented environment to perform horticultural duties that contribute to the excellence of our collections and propagation standards. This individual should be detailed oriented, and maintain excellent skills in organization, labeling, and communication.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform daily assessment of conservation collections and propagation materials in production
  • Conduct daily horticultural tasks including watering, fertilizing, labeling, and prioritizing workflow
  • Implement Integrated Pest Management practices to monitor and eliminate pests and pathogens
  • Maintain detailed records of horticultural/IPM tasks
  • Conduct and document germination and propagation protocols for specific species/genera in a team environment
  • Organize and assist in leading a robust team of horticultural volunteers committed to conservation horticulture
  • Work with other departments (Conservatories/Education) to assist with educational displays and/or exhibits
  • Assist with conservation field work as necessary, including seed collection, habitat management, monitoring and outplanting
  • Conduct occasional tours and assist in training workshops with partners, staff and volunteers
  • Assist in occasional horticultural duties at our Safeguarding and Conservation nursery in Gainesville, GA

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • B.S. in Horticulture, closely related field or equivalent work experience
  • Working knowledge of plants native to the southeastern United States including Sarracenia
  • Highly organized with the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment with high attention to detail and adherence to laboratory research
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Pro-active problem-solving skills
  • Strong ability to document and troubleshoot protocols
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and cooperatively in a team environment
  • Demonstrated ability to provide training and support to a wide variety of audiences

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Some travel is required
  • Current valid driver’s license is required with good driving record
  • Occasional weekend work is required
  • Must be able to lift up to 50lbs on a semi-frequent basis
  • Work requires long durations of standing and frequent movement
  • Ability to be productive in a team environment in adverse weather/environmental conditions
