DESCRIPTION:In a year of anniversaries\, what better way to celebrate the Garden’s 50th than with an encore exhibition of artist Niki de Saint Phalle’s monumental sculptures\, which debuted at the Garden 20 years ago this spring? \nThe French sculptor\, who died in 2002\, is known as one of the first female artists to create massive sculptures\, particularly her “Nanas” — lighthearted\, whimsical and colorful large-scale figures of women\, animals and monsters. \nThis year’s exhibition\, presented May 9 – Sept. 6\, features 41 works in what is believed to be the largest showing of the artist’s work ever presented in North America. Most are on loan from the Niki Charitable Art Foundation\, with others from private collections. \n“Those who saw the 2006 exhibit are going to relish experiencing these fun\, joyful sculptures again\, and those who didn’t are in for a major treat!” said Garden President & CEO Mary Pat Matheson. \nThe often-playful\, extremely colorful sculptures range from Grand Step Totem\, weighing 2\,000 pounds\, and Large Yelling Man\, towering 16.5 feet\, to small wall-hung reliefs measuring 2 feet square. \nThe most iconic of the pieces — displayed throughout the Garden\, as well as in the Conservatory\, Orchid Center and Gardenhouse Gallery — is The Three Graces\, frolicking in the Skyline Garden pond. \nIn addition\, an interpretive exhibition about the artist and her work is on display near the entrance to the Orchid Display House. \nLearn more

DESCRIPTION:Saturdays at 10 a.m.: Drop by the Fuqua Conservatory lobby to watch the frogs jump into action when presented with their meals. An amphibian specialist will share fun facts and answer questions about these captivating creatures. \nPublic frog feedings allow visitors to observe one of the most interesting aspects of these amphibians – their feeding behaviors. Most frogs have long sticky tongues that shoot out at prey. Some\, like Poison frogs\, are able to do this with such incredible speed and accuracy that all visitors notice are flies disappearing. Others\, like the fringed leaf frog\, are dramatic feeders that stuff the crickets into their mouths with their hands.

Families can enjoy water sensory bins\, water lily art\, frog pond shaving cream exploration\, and frog games on the Children’s Garden lawn. Be sure to cool down in the Splash Pad before you head home! \nSeptember: Golden Grows \nIn honor of the Garden’s 50th Anniversary\, September’s Garden Playtime celebrates the golden colors found throughout the landscape. Families are invited to make sunflower art\, scoop and pour in sunflower rice sensory bins\, and paint with corn cobs at our mural station. \nOctober: Harvest Time \nThis month’s activities are inspired by the harvest season. DESCRIPTION:Saturdays at 10 a.m.: Drop by the Fuqua Conservatory lobby to watch the frogs jump into action when presented with their meals. An amphibian specialist will share fun facts and answer questions about these captivating creatures. \nPublic frog feedings allow visitors to observe one of the most interesting aspects of these amphibians – their feeding behaviors. Most frogs have long sticky tongues that shoot out at prey. Some\, like Poison frogs\, are able to do this with such incredible speed and accuracy that all visitors notice are flies disappearing. Others\, like the fringed leaf frog\, are dramatic feeders that stuff the crickets into their mouths with their hands.

Join us for a bug tic-tac-toe game\, dig your hands into our “bees in a hive” sensory bins and homemade scented playdough\, and decorate a “bug rock” to take home!   \nJuly: Animal Adventures \n \nThis July\, Garden Playtime takes inspiration from the lively animal sculptures found in Niki de Saint Phalle’s artwork. Families are invited to dress up as animals\, create a shared animal print mural\, and design your own unique animal to take home. \nAugust: Wonderful Water \nFrom fountains to flowing forms\, Niki de Saint Phalle’s art celebrates the joyful movement of water. Families can enjoy water sensory bins\, water lily art\, frog pond shaving cream exploration\, and frog games on the Children’s Garden lawn. Be sure to cool down in the Splash Pad before you head home! \nSeptember: Golden Grows \nIn honor of the Garden’s 50th Anniversary\, September’s Garden Playtime celebrates the golden colors found throughout the landscape. Families are invited to make sunflower art\, scoop and pour in sunflower rice sensory bins\, and paint with corn cobs at our mural station. \nOctober: Harvest Time \nThis month’s activities are inspired by the harvest season. Learn new recipes and taste freshly prepared courses and wine.\n \nSchedule: Wednesday\, September 16\, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. \nFee: $100 (Member $95) \nJoin waitlist \nAbout Rusty Bowers \n \nRusty Bowers is the owner and lead butcher of Pine Street Market\, a whole animal craft butcher shop in Avondale Estates\, Georgia. \nA graduate of the renowned Culinary Institute of America\, Rusty began his career as a classically trained chef. Working in respected restaurant kitchens and fine dining restaurants from Jacksonville\, Atlanta and Hawaii to Europe and the Middle East\, Rusty eventually fell in love with the ancient art of whole animal butchery and charcuterie. \nRusty’s experiences abroad\, in particular\, had a profound effect on his approach to creating good\, clean food. It wasn’t the techniques\, but rather the approach to food that struck a chord with him. \nIn Europe\, for instance\, there was more of a connection to the food that people bought fresh from the local farmer or the butcher who practiced the time-honored traditions of whole animal butchery. This connection with food resulted in people being more connected with each other and the community.  \nIn 2008\, Rusty officially traded his chef’s coat for a butcher’s apron and launched Pine Street Market\, a whole animal butcher shop specializing in the finest quality charcuterie\, artisan sausages\, and a variety of fresh cuts of locally-sourced\, humanely and sustainably raised pork\, beef\, lamb and poultry hand-crafted in small batches.  \nRusty is also a passionate educator. Using Pine Street Market as his base\, Rusty leads a series of popular hands-on classes ranging from whole hog butchery and sausage-making to curing your own meats\, as well as advanced butchering classes designed for chefs and experienced home-based meat enthusiasts. \nWhen he’s not teaching classes\, you can find him at local farmers’ markets to give cooking demonstrations or chat with local purveyors\, in the production area of Pine Street Market working on a new creation to share with his loyal customers\, or hanging out with his spouse\, Summer\, and their quirky cockapoo\, Gracie.
