Description of Presentation: Saikawa lab at Emory University, together with a community organization Historic Westside Gardens, found heavy metal soil contamination in the Westside of Atlanta, which led to a Superfund site being designated in the area. I will speak on the story behind how this came about and what is important to keep in mind when involved in urban gardening.

Speaker Bio: Eri Saikawa conducts interdisciplinary research on the environment. Her main research questions are related to the source and the magnitude of emissions linked to air pollution, soil contamination and climate change, as well as the impacts of these emissions on humans and on society. She is also interested in what policy measures are available to reduce these emissions, and how politics play a role in the policymaking process.
