Voodoo Lily

Common Name: Voodoo Lily or Devil's Tongue

Scientific Name: Amorphophallus konjac

Origin: China and Japan

Family: Araceae

Bloom time: Late Spring

It's impossible to miss early summer blooms of the Voodoo Lily, also known as Devil's Tongue, Dragon Arum or Snake Palm. This plant is essentially one giant, divided leaf on top of a green and purple stalk. Mature plants produce a 5-foot-tall purple flower around a tuberous aroid that, when in bloom, smells as bad as its various common names might suggest. The odor attracts pollinators but can be mitigated with a gentle rinse.
