One of the most highly-acclaimed writers of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, Jamaica Kincaid is a writer with a clear, illuminating vision of humanity. As a highly regarded novelist, she has also written about her deep love of plants and gardening in several books on the subject, including “My Garden and Among Flowers: A Walk in the Himalayas”, a memoir about a seed-gathering trek with three botanist friends, which was just rereleased in late 2020 with a new introduction by the author. In Among Flowers Kincaid intertwines harrowing encounters with exciting botanical discoveries, fascinating daily details, and lyrical musings on gardens, nature, home, and family.

Kincaid is the recipient of the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award, the Dan David Prize for Literature, the Lila Wallace-Reader’s Digest Fund Award, a Guggenheim Foundation award, and the Prix Femina Etranger award. She teaches in the English, African and African-American Studies departments at Harvard University and lives in Vermont.

Garden guests are able to purchase, “My Garden and Among Flowers: A Walk in the Himalayas” from Charis Books & More at the link below.

The Philip and Elkin Alston Lecture Series is made possible by the generous support of the Charles Loridans Foundation. Admission is free.
