The Atlanta Botanical Garden Gainesville is offering an unpaid internship opportunity for students pursuing Associate’s degrees, Diplomas, or Certificates in Horticulture. This college internship will provide valuable work experience and volunteer hours to students looking to learn about garden design, conservation and/or plant propagation. This internship builds work experience and portfolios that complement coursework taken, while providing new experiences in the green industry.

Program Length & Schedule:

  • 11-week program from September to November.
  • One day a week, including 1 Saturday a month.
  • 3-hour long shifts, Tuesdays-Fridays, morning (9-12), midday (12-3), afternoon (1-4).
  • 30-45 hours total.
  • Opportunity for extracurricular or internship credit.

Program Structure:

  • All shifts will be fulfilled at the GAINESVILLE Garden, 1911 Sweetbay Dr., Gainesville, GA.
  • Roles & Tasks: Students will support Horticulture and Conservation staff, attend and support weekend events, and complete a final portfolio. Students may choose their portfolio from the following topic: designing a public garden, creating a herbarium collection, or running propagation trials.
  • Cohort Size: maximum of 3 students per semester.
  • Fall Semester 2026 Deadlines:
    • Applications due August 20, 2026
    • Virtual interviews August 24-26, 2026
    • Decision August 27, 2026
    • Hours begin the week of September 1, 2026
    • All hours must be completed no later than November 13, 2026

Program Requirements:

  • Must be eligible to work in the United States.
  • Able to work outside in a variety of conditions.
  • Able to lift 40 lbs and carry out physically demanding tasks.
  • Must be 18 years or older by the start of the internship and a registered college student.
  • Willing to follow policies and procedures of the Atlanta Botanical Garden.
  • Must have one academic or professional letter of recommendation submitted by application deadline.
