Frog Baby

This prominent bronze statue was placed on extended loan to the Garden from Atlanta’s High Museum of Art in 1979. It had been given to the Atlanta Art Association by Mrs. Hunt Chipley. Frog Baby is always a favorite sculpture in the Garden, particularly among the younger visitors.

“A baby girl stands with both feet together on a globe resting on four frogs. She looks upward, laughing, a frog held by one leg, dangling from each hand. Feet and toes are squeezed together to hold her mirth over the capture of the frogs. The chubby forms and infectious merriment of childhood are engagingly recorded,” shared Sig Guthman, the editor of the 2003 edition of the sculpture notebook.

A “must” stop for all children’s tours at the Garden, Frog Baby seems to unleash the creative emotions of the young visitors. They are asked, “How do you think she feels? - HAPPY!” They are encouraged to “play statue,” to cross their little feet and pretend they have frogs in their hands to put on a happy smile, and to look up to the sky and express the joy of being frog babies.
