About Chef Duane Nutter

Award-winning chef Duane Nutter will always be remembered for his role in creating One Flew South, the first airport restaurant in the US to be recognized by the James Beard Foundation. Under his leadership, the restaurant received two coveted award nominations for food and beverage.

Searching for a “blank slate” without the TSA security lines, Chef Duane landed in Mobile, Alabama, where the abundance of fresh seafood – along with local produce – gave him the inspiration to truly articulate a distinct culinary vision; one that incorporates all of the influences that shaped his career. From Louisiana bayou to the Northwest coastal region… with stops along the way in Kentucky’s bourbon country and Palm Beach’s renowned Ritz Carlton… Nutter saw every career stop as an opportunity to build on the fine dining foundation he received from his mentor, the legendary

Chef Darryl Evans (the first black chef to represent the US as a member of the Culinary Olympic Team.)

Chef Duane called his restaurant Southern National, a term coined by Esquire magazine to describe his unique culinary style. Before long, accolades were coming from far and wide. Nutter was named a semifinalist for the James Beard Foundation’s Best New Restaurant 2016, Best Southern Chef in 2018 and 2020. Nutter’s success caused the New York Times to name Southern National one of the top 50 restaurants in the US.

In November, 2022, Chef Duane and his business partner, Reggie Washington announced a return to Atlanta, GA with a Southern National Restaurant located in the Summerhill neighborhood and a new Southern National Market in Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. Nutter followed up this accomplishment in 2024 with yet another James Beard Award nomination and being named Airport Chef of the Year by the industry’s Food & Beverage Awards.
